I attempt to understand the theory of relativity by having a baby. Plus recs for Ernesto Morales' Object Solutions, Nathaniel Russell's fake fliers, and Rob Stephenson's journey into Pigtown.
Perfect summary of the experience of time under parenting conditions. Days disappear, while also seeming eternal.
"That was when I discovered I had the ability to replay full Simpsons episodes word-for-word in my mind."
Question for the other parents/fellow Simpsons heads in the Duffy-verse...what age is the correct age to introduce your kid to the Simpsons? I am eager, but don't want to jump the gun.
Thank you, Brian! And great question. I have no answer for you, but I'm curious to know what your take is.
Part of me wants to say that the correct way to do it is let them discover it for themselves and then really go all the way down the rabbit hole. But then what if they don't find it? It feels like it would be very fun to watch together.
This reminds me of a wonderful radio blurb I listened to today on time in a submarine deep underwater, and also how she thought everyone should experience the humility that comes from it. Resonate with the time variable stretchiness of days with baby and elements of the eight years post college, though fortunately I never had a run in with exactly that sort of a steely eyed 3am vinyl playing armchair sleeper while first year teaching. Also, thanks for sharing the fake posters. Love the “tired? Sleep anywhere, the world is your futon” and many others. They’re like far side comics, the more you read, the more they grow on you.
dear chris,
i had a wonderful TIME reading what you wrote about TIME.
love,
myq
PS imagine what it would be like if the DAYS were short and the YEARS were long. JUST IMAGINE! (if you want to. or can't help it now.)
Thank you, Myq! Consider this post a present from me to past you

Also, there’s some serious comedy material potential there. If you check it out, make sure not to miss the alternate name for the deep sea cusk eels.

Thanks so much for reading and for these recommendations, Erik!
That’s a pretty awesome superpower being able to remember Simpsons episodes word for word.
